>> [inaudible] the protesters out there. >> thank you, press. president trump: next week. i will be making my decision this week. we will be announcing next week. candidates,tanding and we will pick a truly great supreme court justice, but i will be announcing at sometime next week. thank you all very much. wednesday,on president trump spoke at the department of homeland security on construction of a wall along the mexico-u.s. border and how he plans to deal with sanctuary cities. this is about 15 minutes.
strength, and definitely that determination that you have to have to get the job done and to get it done correctly. [inaudible] country.eliver to the he will deliver to the american people like you have never seen before. [applause] president trump: [inaudible] discussed the terrible storms that struck the southeastern united states. i have instructed fema to do all they can to help those suffering and affected.
already, we have approved georgia and mississippi, and others are rapidly on their way, so fema has done an incredible , and it needs to be. homeland security is in the business of saving lives. of homelandnt security has many, many different divisions, but one of of most important missions dhs is its law enforcement mission. this is a law enforcement agency. [applause] but for too long, your offices
and agents have not been allowed to properly do their jobs. you know that, right? you know that. absolutely. but that is all about to change, and i am very happy about it, and you are very happy about it. out, i'm asking you to enforce the laws of the united states of america. they will be enforced and enforced strongly. [applause] president trump: people are surprised to hear that we do not need new laws. we will work within the existing system and framework. we are going to restore the rule of law to the united states. before we go any further, i want bordergnize the ice and patrol officers in the room today and to honor their service, and not just because they unanimously endorsed me for
president. that helped, but that's not the only reason. i would like to recognize brandon judd, the president of the national border patrol council, and the president of national [inaudible] you guys are about to be very, very busy doing your jobs the way you want to do them. where are they? where are those guys? in the middle of a crisis on our southern border. the unprecedented surge of illegal migrants from central america is harming both mexico id the united states, and believe the steps we will take starting right now will improve
both of ourn countries. going to be very, very good for mexico. nottion without borders is a nation. beginning today, the united states of america gets back control of its borders and gets back its borders. [applause] trump: thank you. i just signed two executive orders that will save thousands of lives, millions of jobs, and billions and billions of dollars. are foro orders s we outlinedeform during the campaign. i want to emphasize we will be working in partnership with our to improvemexico safety and economic opportunity on both sides of the border.
i had deep admiration for the people of mexico, and i greatly look forward to meeting again .ith the president of mexico we will be doing that shortly. we will discuss close coordination on many important issues between our countries. this coordination includes the dismantling of cartels and keeping illegal weapons and cash from flowing out of america and into mexico, out of our country, out of the united states, and it goes right into mexico. they have to stop it. we have to stop it. we are going to save lives on both sides of the border, and we a strongrstand that and healthy economy in mexico is very good for the united states -- very, very good. we want that to happen. by working together on positive trade, safe borders, and
economic cooperation, i truly believe we can enhance the relationship between our two nations, to a degree not seen a very,certainly in very long time. i think our relationship with mexico is going to get better. here is a brief summary of what actions are contained in my executive orders. homelandtary of security, working with myself and my staff, will begin immediate construction of a border wall. [applause] president trump: so badly needed. you folks know how badly needed it is. this will also help mexico by deterring illegal immigration from central america and by disrupting violent cartel networks. as i have said repeatedly to the country, we are going to get the bad ones out, the criminals and
the drug deals and gangs and gang members and cartel leaders. the day is over when they can stay in our country and wreak havoc. we are going to get them out and we are going to get them out fast, and john kelly is going to leave that way. [applause] our order -- president trump: our order also does the following -- ends the policy of catch and release at the border, requires other countries to take back their criminals. they will take them back. cracks down on sanctuary cities. empowers ice officers to target and remove those who pose a
threat to public safety. calls for the hiring of another 5000 border patrol officers. calls for the tripling the number of ice officers. [applause] president trump: and you both do an incredible job, but you need help. you need more. creates an office of homeland security dedicated to supporting the victims of illegal immigrant crime. [applause] president trump: for years, the media has largely ignored the stories of americans and lawful residents victimized by open borders. to all of those hurting out there, i repeat to you these words -- we hear you. we see you. you will never, ever be ignored
again. [applause] president trump: as i traveled the country, i had a chance to get to know mothers who had lost their children to violence spilling over the border. i want to thank the remembrance project -- such a credible people -- forgiving these families a voice. aey are called angel moms for reason -- because they are a voice to protect all of america's children. their children have not died in vain, believe me. [applause] president trump: let me talk about how in forcing immigration laws can -- people talk about -- enforcingg
immigration laws can separate people from their families, but they do not talk about how not enforcing them can separate american people from their families. as your president, i have no greater duty than to protect the lives of the american people. [applause] first, these families lost their loved ones. then they endured a system that while at the same time constantly rewarding those who broke the law. it has beenmilies, one injustice after another, but that all turns around beginning today. [applause] president trump: we are joined
here this afternoon by parents whose children were horribly killed by individuals living here illegally. i will now read these parents' .ames and ask them to stand many have become friends of mine over the last two years and have supported me so dearly, and i appreciate it. lost herndoza, who son, police sergeant brandon mendoza. [applause] trump: fred and his son james, who lost billy. billy was fred's son and james' brother. byd's wife was also killed an illegal immigrant, somebody
that should never, ever have been here. [applause] -- president trump: laura wilkerson, who lost her 17-year-old son, beautiful josh. josh was special. where is laura? thank you, laura. [applause] president trump: kerry -- carrie ruiz, who lost her young daughter, aliceia. thank you. beautiful. where is she? thank you very much. thank you. [applause] president trump: stephen, who lost his 21-year-old run, grant. , grant.1-year-old son thank you. we have many others with us from
remembrance and other groups, and these are incredible people that have endured so much, and i just want to thank everybody for being here. very, very special people. thank you. nothing can ever make their pain go away, but i want you to know your children will not have lost .heir lives for no reason they have set this incredible goal for so many. these were great young people, and they will always be remembered -- always. we will never forget them. [applause] president trump: and to the parents and loved ones, you kept the justice alive with your flame of justice alive with your activism. now together, we will save
thousands and thousands of lives. when it comes to public safety, there is no place for politics. no republicans, no democrats, just citizens, and good citizens. we want safe communities, and we demand safe communities for everyone. we want respect. we want great schools. we want dignity and equality for everyone, and i will be a president -- i promise you -- for everyone. [applause] president trump: we will bridge our divisions, heal our wounds, and unify our country. if we do that, if we work together, then there is nothing we cannot achieve as americans.
